AMC 12 preparation shouldn’t be technical and daunting. This is a competition like any other, and you should start preparing early if you want to pass. You need to know a few things ahead of the competition to increase your chances of passing.
Student Preparation
The best way students can prepare for their exams is to practice analytical and creative thinking throughout the year. Schools involved with the AMC often have year-round activities. These activities are connected to math clubs, special classes or other extracurricular groups. Students can benefit from practising mathematics problems from past competitions. The AMC offers a wide range of resources that can help students sharpen their problem-solving skills.
Who is eligible to participate?
Learners with a passion for problem-solving in grade ten or below and under seventeen and a half years of age on the day of the AMC competition are eligible to participate in AMC 10. Learners in grade twelve or below and are under nineteen and a half years of age during the day of the competition are eligible for AMC 12 and should start their AMC prep early.
Checklist
Participants should prefill their name information on the answer sheets before the competition. Some of the most common errors that students make are filling more than one circle in the column and not completely filling in the circles. Some even fail to use a pencil. Students should use their full legal names. Abbreviations or nicknames are not allowed. Failure to do this will disqualify their results. This will cause delays in scoring.
Students should have time for pre-competition and post-competition activities. This means that they should have a room for at least one hour and forty-five minutes during the competition day. Review the rules for the competition certification form that is included in the competition materials.
Remind the participants of the location and time of the exam a day before the competition. Get a supply of two pencils and unmarked scratch paper. Make sure the participants know that they aren’t required to have any aids other than graph paper, scratch paper, protractors, erasers and rulers. Electronic devices such as calculators, phones and tablets are not allowed.
Guidelines for administering the exam
A competition manager administers the exam. This person should be a faculty member, a teacher or an administrator affiliated with the institution. They should be adults who aren’t related to any of the students. A parent or guardian should never be involved in the administration of the competition.
The exam should take place at an educational institution or school that has been registered for the exam. All students participating in the exam should take the exam at the same time. This can be in one group or in a different classroom. Every group of students participating in the competition should be under the supervision of a competition manager or a grown-up person who fully understands the responsibilities. The supervisor shouldn’t be related to any of the participants. Students should know this during their AMC 12 preparation.
