Going back to the beginning with Caftans

Where did it all start with a caftan?

When someone mentions Caftan, the first image that comes to mind is of a person basking in comfort and leisure on a beach with the material gently stroking the skin. The word caftan makes us instantly feel comfortable- almost having a psychological effect on us. Caftan looks exotic, caftan looks bohemian and it has now become synonymous with fashion for any loose tunic cum robe that one would wear.

Its origins and the style

If we begin to trace the origins of the caftan, it has to be a garment that has stemmed out of the Middle East or North Africa. The abaya that some women wear around the world, from which a caftan originated, can be both a religious sentiment and a fashion statement. An actual Caftan looks quite ordinary. It is a narrow cut robe with full sleeves with a neck that runs deep or is open all the way. Sometimes it has a button on the sides to tie it like a coat. This voluminous garment which is pretty much shapeless, with sleeves that camouflage with it, is what a true kaftan looks like. One can find a huge variety from wholesaler caftan where retailers and sellers can buy in bulk.

Who wore it first?

When we talk about the word Caftan, it is actually a Persian word. It is a garment style that has its origins in Mesopotamia. The Sultans in Ottoman from the early 14th-18th centuries put on caftans that were beautifully decorated and lavishly embroidered. Such was the value that important generals and dignitaries were given caftan as rewards.

Materials

Caftan has no rule is what makes a caftan so special. It can be made out of any fabric, in any style. Most caftans worn by people in the world are made out of wool, cotton, silk and are tied around the waist with a rope or sash.

Can men wear it?

The thing about a caftan is that it is unisex. People often imagine women to be wearing things that are open-bottomed, but as mentioned above, caftans were originally worn by Ottoman sultans. A man caftan is the most comfortable thing that can be worn. A quirky style choice for sure, but if you’re not making a statement then what’s the use of wearing anything at all?

Where is it mostly worn?

A caftan is mostly worn in really hot climates because the shape of the caftan allows for proper ventilation keeping the body cool and lowering the body temperature.

In Morocco, this coveted fashion statement has a cultural status. Different materials are for different occasions. The first time caftan was ever mentioned in Morocco, was in the 16th century. The kaftan in Morocco represents heritage, diverse identities, and cultural influences. Men and women together prepare the caftans with colorful threads and buttons with materials coming from the workshops of belt makers and accessories from jewelers. The final touches are added with love and affection making it a hand-woven work of art that you can keep or gift.
