Yoga offers new experiences and each one is worth it.

I recently started a new yoga form with a new yoga instructor near me. The kind of yoga that I am doing now is Kundalini yoga. In the past, I have always done Yin yoga and Hatha yoga, as well as restorative yoga. Each time I do a particular kind of yoga, I think it is the best yoga there is. I get so enthusiastic, I tell everybody that I have discovered the best and most brilliant kind of yoga and I tell them they all have to do it. And that is because I have worked out, after all my yoga lessons, that all yoga is brilliant yoga. Right now I am doing Kundalini which focuses on breath work and chanting, and is quite weird when you are new to it, but it is fantastic. I never raise a sweat and it never feels hard, although we hold positions for ages, chanting, I always feel like I work out. And I have lost weight – a bonus.

Yin yoga

Yin yoga is probably the most popular kind of yoga and you will always find a yoga studio that offers Yin. Yin is a beautiful practice of yoga. It focuses on breathing too, but not fire breathing which is what Kundalini does, and it is about the flow. Rather than holding poses for ages, each pose flows into another. Yin includes a lot of inversion work, such as a downward dog or a camel pose, or a headstand if you are experienced, and it can be a hard workout. It is a fabulous workout though and if you have never done yoga before, Yin is a good yoga to start with.

Hatha yoga

Perhaps Hatha yoga is the yoga to start with. This is where you do the sun salutations at the beginning of Practise and where you end in Shavasana, which is a composed pose for meditation. Between the two you hold a number of poses, each one working on a different part of your body, sometimes all parts at the same time. It is about nose breathing too, and it is about working the body and the mind as one. It is also a popular yoga style and there are many elements of Hatha yoga in all the types of yoga.

Yoga attire

To do yoga you only need a comfortable pair of pants or leggings to wear, a tee shirt and something warm for afterwards. You do not have to dress up, you do not have to wear gym clothes and anything goes as long as you are comfortable. You need a yoga mat although most yoga studios offer these for their practitioners. You will need to take your shoes before you enter any yoga studio and definitely switch off your phones.
